Looking to rebound

0001-01-01 00:00:00

DALLAS -- The Habs will be looking to bounce back from a tough night in Dallas when they land in Nashville. Facing the NHL’s hottest offensive team, the Canadiens knew they would have their work cut out for them against the Stars on Saturday night. Heading into the game, the Stars were averaging 3.34 goals-per-game, and had three players sitting among the league’s Top 20 point getters – including two in the Top 3. Their power play was clicking at a 21.6 percent clip whereas the Habs were looking to snap a seven-game scoreless streak with the man advantage, having gone 0-for-21 in that span. Unfortunately, the first game of the Canadiens’ current eight-game road swing didn’t bring the kind of momentum the Habs had hoped for. “Eight penalties against a team like that. It’s embarrassing,” underlined captain Max Pacioretty, whose team allowed three power play goals against in the 6-2 loss in Dallas. “I look at the game as a whole and after they went up 1-0 and maybe 2-0, it was like we didn’t have the

The Montreal Canadiens mourn the loss of Richard “Dickie” Moore

0001-01-01 00:00:00

PRESS RELEASE MONTREAL - The Canadiens organization was deeply saddened to learn that former player and Hall-of-Famer Richard “Dickie” Moore passed away earlier today in Montreal. Moore was 84. Born in the Montreal borough of Park Extension on January 6, 1931, Dickie Moore was one of the most exciting and productive players of his era. After two consecutive Memorial Cup championships, in 1949 with the Montreal Jr. Royals and the following year with the Montreal Jr. Canadiens, recording 24 points in a mere 13 games, Moore made his NHL debut with the Canadiens mid-way though the 1951-52 season. In his Canadiens debut at age 21, he managed to record 33 points in as many games and was a deserving candidate for the Calder award as Rookie of the Year. Moore’s NHL career really took off in 1954-55 after he first etched his name on the coveted Stanley Cup in 1953. The skilled left winger would quickly become one of the league’s most prolific point getter. After successively recording 36, 50 and 58 points fro

CANADIENS (20-10-4) @ STARS (23-7-2) The Canadiens kick off an eight game road trip Saturday in Dallas. The team leaves on the road hoping to put behind it a difficult month of December, during which it only won two games. Thursday night at the Bell Centre, the Canadiens were shut out for the first time this season by the Los Angeles Kings and Jonathan Quick, who made forty-five saves on his way to a 3-0 win. Two days earlier, the Sharks beat the Canadiens by a 3 to 1 score. In an attempt to give a boost to an offense that has scored just 17 goals in its last 10 games, the organization called up forward Michael McCarron from the St. John’s IceCaps. This will be a first time with the big club for the Canadiens’ first round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. In his first year of professional hockey, he was in eight position in the scoring race in the American Hockey League before being called up, thanks to 24 points, including 13 goals and 11 assists, in 28 games. As for the home team, the Dallas

The Last Word: Howie Mandel

0001-01-01 00:00:00

He’s spent the last three decades in front of the camera, but Howie Mandel first got his start on stage working his way up the ranks of the Toronto comedy circuit. A star on the small screen as a judge on America’s Got Talent, Mandel can also be spotted making the rounds in his role as a spokesperson for the Bell “Let’s Talk” campaign that focuses on ending the stigma associated with mental illness. We caught up with the 60-year-old comedian to chat about a number of his passions, including his love of Montreal and all things sports. We’ve seen you a few times in Montreal for the Just for Laughs Festival. What’s the one thing you have to do whenever you’re in town? HOWIE MANDEL: I actually lived in Montreal for a year a while ago, down the street from the Old Forum. I love this town. I love any reason to come to Montreal: Just for Laughs, the food, the nightlife – Montreal is very alive. Its culture is very much like Europe, but it has the warmth of Canada. Every time I come back, I have to go to Beautys

Tough times

MONTREAL – Things just aren’t going the Canadiens’ way right now. They haven’t for the last two weeks. On Thursday night, Michel Therrien’s troops suffered their sixth loss in their last seven games dating back to December 3, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Los Angeles Kings at the Bell Centre in their final home game of the calendar year. Despite registering a season-high 45 shots on goal, the Canadiens simply couldn’t solve netminder Jonathan Quick, who stymied the home side all game long to pick up his second shutout of the season. “They’re a hell of a hockey team over there. That’s the tightest checking game I’ve ever played in the NHL. They force everything and they don’t give us much room. For us to get close to 50 shots on net, I thought we played a pretty good game,” offered defenseman Nathan Beaulieu, who logged 22:30 of ice time in the loss playing alongside P.K. Subban on the Canadiens’ top pairing. “It all comes down to results. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the job done again.” That being

Game Preview: KINGS (19-9-2) @ CANADIENS (20-9-3) The Canadiens have an appointment with the Pacific Division leading Los Angeles Kings, Thursday night at the Bell Centre. With 40 points, the Kings hold a nine-point lead over the second place San Jose Sharks, who beat the Habs at the Bell Centre Tuesday night. Darryl Sutter’s troops have lost their last two games including a 2-1 overtime loss against the Buffalo Sabres Saturday and a 5-3 loss against Ottawa Monday - but had previously strung together a six game win streak. The Kings have been tough to score against this season, with an average of 2.17 goals allowed per game which is good for second in the NHL in this regard. The Habs, who have lost five of their last six games, dropped their most recent matchup Tuesday against San Jose. Since scoring five goals on November 25 against the New York Rangers, the

A natural warrior

MONTREAL – Noah Juulsen is steadily assuming a leadership role on the Everett Silvertips’ back end, and embracing the responsibility that comes with it. In the midst of his third full-time WHL campaign, the 18-year-old rearguard continues to progress nicely under the watchful eye of veteran bench boss Kevin Constantine, who speaks rather highly of Juulsen’s willingness to take younger players under his wing to ease them along in their transition to playing the Silvertips’ brand of hockey. “That’s probably where his comfort level is right now. In Noah’s case, it isn’t necessarily about telling someone his own age or someone older than him what he thinks they should be doing. I think his comfort level is with younger players coming up. That’s great to see. I think that’s how you start your leadership career,” offered Constantine, who has coached Juulsen since his arrival in Everett on a full-time basis back in 2013-14. “Come next year, he will carry a huge mantle of leadership on his shoulders here. Party crashers

0001-01-01 00:00:00

MONTREAL -- Carey Price was in the building on Tuesday, but it was another goaltender who stole the show. Pregame, Alex Galchenyuk warned of the effect the Bell Centre can have on visiting teams looking to crash the party. Cue Martin Jones and the San Jose Sharks who arrived in Montreal having lost six in a row. On a day when Price -- still sidelined with a lower body injury but making an appearance during a TV timeout to a standing ovation -- earned the Lou Marsh Award as Canada’s top athlete, Jones stopped 26 of 27 shots -- including three over a pair of Habs power plays -- to earn the night’s First Star on the way to a 3-1 decision. “We’re getting great looks, our personnel is so good and we’ve got so many options, but we’re just not beating goalies right now. I’m sure we’re going to look at it and get back to basics, but we hit a hot goalie tonight. He played a hell of a game,” admitted Nathan Beaulieu, who was denied of a sure goal with the man advantage during the third period. “He’s a world-cl
