The Montreal Canadiens have a new farm team this season, the St. John's IceCaps. To help Canadiens fans track the team's performance in the AHL, we have invited Charles Dart, website contributor of the IceCaps' official website to prepare a bi-weekly summary of the action in Newfoundland. ST. JOHN’S - The St. John’s IceCaps are seeing first-hand the trickling effects of injuries in Montréal and the subsequent NHL call-ups that follow. The IceCaps continue to be without top scorers Sven Andrighetto, Daniel Carr, and Charles Hudon as well as goaltender Dustin Tokarski who are still on assignment with the Canadiens. Bud Holloway, Christian Thomas, and Zach Fucale have also had various assignments and reassignments between the two clubs. St. John’s completed their six-game road trip on December 5th with a 3-1-1-1 record before returning home to face the Rochester Americans (BUF) for a two-game set this past weekend. The club suffered just their first regulation home loss of the season at Mile One Centre on

BROSSARD – The Canadiens will likely be welcoming Torrey Mitchell back to the lineup on Tuesday night. Mitchell, who suffered a lower-body injury on November 19 against the Arizona Coyotes, hasn’t seen game action since. After missing the last 11 games, it’s no surprise that the 30-year-old Greenfield Park native is eager to return to active duty against one of his former clubs – the San Jose Sharks. “I’m ready to play. It will be up to the coaches, but I feel like I’m ready to go,” offered Mitchell, who was selected 126th overall by the Sharks back in 2004 and spent the first four seasons of his NHL career plying his trade in Northern California. “I was out a little bit longer than I expected. I thought that I’d be out for two weeks, but it took over three. It’s all behind me now, though. I’m not really worried about anything. I just followed the doctor’s orders and I took things one step at a time.” At practice on Monday, Mitchell centered the Canadiens’ fourth line flanked by young guns Daniel Car

MONTREAL – Brian Flynn played the role of hockey hero in his collegiate experience playing outdoors. Back in January 2012, the Lynnfield, MA native was a senior captain at the University of Maine leading the Black Bears into battle against the rival University of New Hampshire Wildcats in the Sun Life Frozen Fenway event at Fenway Park. An estimated 38,456 fans took in the back-and-forth contest on a rather warm day in Boston, which ultimately came to a dramatic conclusion in overtime. Joey Diamond’s goal 13 seconds into the third period gave Maine a 4-2 advantage, but New Hampshire wasn’t about to let the 111th all-time meeting between the two teams – commonly referred to as the “Border War” – end without putting up a serious fight. The Wild Cats struck for a pair of goals minutes later, finding the back of the net at the three-minute and 4:43 marks of the final frame to tie things up and send the tilt to an extra frame. The sudden death period lasted just 89 seconds, as Flynn re-directed a shot by

CANADIENS (19-8-3) VS. SENATORS (15-9-5) BROADCASTERS: CBC, TVA SPORTS, CITY MONTREAL Michel Therrien’s troops will try to get back on track on Saturday night when they play host to the Ottawa Senators at the Bell Centre. The Canadiens have dropped their last four games, coming up short against the Capitals, Hurricanes, Bruins and finally the Red Wings on Thursday night in Detroit. The Habs’ latest defeat was particularly tough to swallow as they led 2-1 in the third period before the Red Wings stormed right back with two goals in less than two minutes to pick up their 16th win of the season. Sven Andrighetto (4) and Tomas Fleischmann (8) scored for the Canadiens, while Charles Hudon made his NHL debut and picked up his first career point with an assist on Andrighetto’s tally in the second period. For his part, Dustin Tokarski was solid in goal in the loss, making 26 stops in his first start of the year. The Senators, meanwhile, are wrapping up a four-game road swing with a stop in Montreal. MONTREAL - Tasked with responding in the face of adversity, the Canadiens looked like a team on a mission Saturday night against the Senators. In the midst of their longest winless streak of the season, the Canadiens banded together and came out of the gates flying, peppering Senators' goaltender Craig Anderson with 27 first period shots. "It was a big performance from our team, especially in the first period. We put a lot of pressure on the opposing team, specifically on their goalie,” praised coach Therrien, whose troops tied the Canadiens all-time record for shots on goal in a single period, equalizing the benchmark set on January 1, 1973. “We’ve been struggling to win games recently, even when we do a lot of good things. I wasn’t discouraged. We controlled the puck possession battle and we knew that if we kept working, good things would happen." Though the Eastern Conference leading Habs had yet to experience a great deal of adversity thus far in the 2015-16 season, their bench boss is no strange

DETROIT - The Canadiens have been battling adversity on the injury front as of late, and they’ve also been taking a hit in the win-loss column, too. On Thursday night, Michel Therrien’s troops suffered their fourth straight defeat, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. Errors proved costly for the CH, particularly in the second half of third period. With the Canadiens clinging to a 2-1 lead, Jeff Blashill’s squad rallied with two strikes in quick succession, as Justin Abdelkader scored a power play goal at 12:48 before Darren Helm lit the lamp again 71 seconds later with the eventual game-winner to run Detroit’s point-streak to 12 straight games. “It was our second game in 48 hours. The effort was there, but we did some things that we just can’t do. We took a bad penalty on the tying goal, then there was a bad giveaway on the winning goal. Those are things that we can’t let happen,” offered Therrien, who saw his club suffer a similar fate a day earlier, surrendering two qu

Hudon, who received his first NHL call-up on Tuesday and is in the midst of his second full campaign in the pros, has put up 30 goals and 80 points over the course of his AHL career. 849 – Number of players who’ve sported the coveted CH over the years, with Hudon adding his name to that special list on Thurs
