Game Preview: CANADIENS (20-14-3) @ LIGHTNING (18-15-3) TV: RDS, SNE – 7:30 p.m. Atlantic Division rivals clash on Monday night as the Habs take on the Lightning on the road in Tampa Bay. Having lost their last six matches, the Canadiens will look to get back in the win column against Jon Cooper’s troops. In their most recent outing, the Canadiens suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Eastern Conference leading Washington Capitals. Rookie forward Daniel Carr scored the lone marker for the Habs in the loss, while Andrei Markov and Alex Galchenyuk drew the assists. Goaltender Mike Condon did his best to keep the Habs in the game, turning aside 30 of the 33 shots thrown on net by the Capitals. The strong performance earned the rookie netminder the start against the Lighting on Monday night, a team that Condon will face for the first time in his career. The Lightning, who presently sit just four points back of the Canadiens, won their most recent contest on Saturday night against the Blue Ja

Florida for the holidays

0001-01-01 00:00:00

TAMPA – A lot like turkey dinner at Christmas, the Canadiens’ annual Florida road trip during the holiday season has become a tradition. For the 11th time since the 1996-97 campaign, the Canadiens will spend a few days at the end of December in the Sunshine State. In past years, this particular trip provided the perfect opportunity to escape Quebec’s harsh winters. Things are certainly different this time around as Mother Nature has been kind to Montrealers in recent weeks as 2015 winds down. Michel Therrien’s troops arrive in Florida looking to put their struggles behind them and get back on track. With that in mind, a two-game stop in the most populous region of the Southeastern United States couldn’t have come at a better time. The Canadiens have enjoyed success in these tilts in years past, and they’ll undoubtedly be looking to make it happen again. When the Habs hit the ice at Amalie Arena in Tampa on Monday night, they’ll try to improve upon the 6-3-0-1 record the club has amassed in Lightning

Time to deliver

WASHINGTON – Snapping out of their current funk is proving tough for the Canadiens – and increasingly frustrating, too. Michel Therrien’s troops suffered their sixth consecutive loss on Saturday night, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Eastern Conference leading Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center. It marked the 10th time in their last 11 games that Therrien’s squad had come out on the wrong side of the scoresheet and failed to come away with a single point for their effort. In short, over two weeks have passed since the Canadiens put up a number in the win column. “We did a lot of good things, but it just isn’t enough. We need to find a way to get our mojo back and play the way we did at the beginning of the year. We have to give our goaltender a bit of a cushion, too. When we get scored on first, we have a tendency to slow down and fall apart. The first goal is important. Everyone has to give more,” offered David Desharnais, referencing the fact that the CH surrendered the opening marker once agai

WASHINGTON - Here's a numerical look at Saturday night's game between the Habs and the Capitals. 400 – Number of games Lars Eller has played over the course of his NHL career, including Saturday night’s tilt at the Verizon Center in Washington. The pioneer

BROSSARD – Pierre Gervais’ office at the Bell Sports Complex is a veritable hockey museum. His walls are decorated with photographs of him alongside NHL stars, along with other priceless artifacts tied to not only his work with the Canadiens, but also the Canadian contingents he’s helped claim gold over the years at the Olympic Games. Photographs of his children are there, too, as are awards recognizing his remarkable years of service in the hockey world. Among the vast array of artifacts in Gervais’ private workspace are precious souvenirs commemorating his experience working at a pair of outdoor games – the Heritage Classic contests in both 2003 and 2011. “The first time in Edmonton, we were pioneers when it came to outdoor games. It was the first-ever NHL event of its kind. We were a little bit like guinea pigs at the time,” recalled Gervais, the Canadiens’ equipment manager, who is in his 29th season with the squad. Having always been a Quebec resident, Gervais knew full well just how cold Nov

Taking a Timeout

ST. PAUL – Christmas is coming at the right time for the Canadiens. December hasn’t been an easy month for the Habs, who have dropped nine of their last 10 games, including five straight to close out the schedule heading into the Christmas break. Despite outshooting their opponents in eight of those 10 games, the biggest issue for the Canadiens has been finding the back of the net during the current stretch, having been outscored by a 32 to 15 margin following Tuesday’s 2-1 loss in Minnesota. While there’s no question the Canadiens are armed with enough offensive weapons to be lighting the lamp on a more frequent basis, Max Pacioretty admits that having a few days to reload could be just the solution the Habs need to rekindle their scoring spark. “Our situation is more mental than physical,” admitted the Habs captain, who had 12 shot attempts in the game, landing five on Darcy Kuemper in his 20:S18 workload against the Wild. “It’s a matter of confidence right now and hopefully this break helps our c

Subban potted a trio of goals in an 8-1 rout of the Wild. 8 – Number of games Devante Smith-Pelly was forced to miss with a lower body injury, making his return to action in Minnesota after having been sidelined since December 7. 3:41 – Amount of ice time enjoyed by Tom Gilbert in the game, before leaving early in the first period with a lower body injury after playing just five shifts against the Wild. 5 – Number of shots fired by Max Pacioretty on Tuesday night, giving him 145 on the season, good enough for third in the league in that category. 4 – Number of hits dished out by Alexei Emelin in the game, helping the bruising blue-liner become the 13th player – and first Hab – to hit the century mark in that category this season. 21 – Percentage of games played by T

OBITUARY: Richard Winston Moore (Jan. 6, 1931 - Dec. 19, 2015)

OBITUARY Montreal Canadiens legend Dickie Moore left this world on Dec. 19, 2015 at 2:12 pm departing with the same quiet grace with which he lived his full, remarkable life. He was 84. Dickie was a product of Montreal’s blue-collar Park Extension district, one of 10 children, who shrugged off serious injuries as a youth to become a tremendous hockey player. He won Memorial Cup junior championships with the Montreal Royals in 1949 and the Montreal Junior Canadiens in 1950, then graduated to the NHL Canadiens in 1951. Dickie would win six Stanley Cups during a 12-season Habs career through 1963, a ferocious checker with a nose for the net. Twice he won the NHL’s Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top point-scorer, in 1957-58 and 1958-59, playing the final three months of ’57-58 with a cast on his broken left wrist. Dickie retired for a year following the 1962-63 season to focus on Location Dickie Moore Rentals, the construction-equipment company that grew from modest beginnings, founded in 1961. But h
