BROSSARD – The Penguins aren’t tearing up the NHL these days, but Michel Therrien’s troops know they’ll have their collective hands full on Saturday night. Even though Mike Sullivan’s squad isn’t rattling off wins on a regular basis, they still boast some of the most dynamic players in the league – all of whom are capable of just about anything on offense game in and game out. Chief among them is captain Sidney Crosby, who despite struggling to start the 2015-16 campaign, has come on extra strong as of late with six goals and nine points in his last seven games. Needless to say, keeping a close eye on the Penguins’ No. 87 is of primordial importance for the Canadiens in their bid to secure their second straight victory following Wednesday night’s 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils. “You always pay attention to Sidney. He’s the best player in the world. He’s playing well. It was only a matter of time. You have to be aware of him on the ice. He’s the best player in the world. Our job is to make sure he

MONTREAL – Max Friberg is looking forward to a fresh start in the Canadiens organization. Acquired on Thursday in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, the 23-year-old right-winger will travel from Southern California to Newfoundland on Friday to join the St. John’s IceCaps as they begin a six-game homestand at Mile One Centre. Friberg had been playing with the Ducks’ AHL affiliate – the San Diego Gulls – since the start of the year, putting up five goals and 17 points in 25 games. That ranked him fifth on the team in scoring. He also played five games with Bruce Boudreau’s contingent back in November. News of the deal came as somewhat of a shock to Friberg, who has been in the Ducks’ fold since they selected him in the fifth round, 143rd overall, at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. “You never expect something like this to happen, but I was really excited when I heard it was Montreal. Just being a part of an Original Six organization in the NHL is something I’m really looking forward to,” offered Friberg, who de

MONTREAL – It’s hard to believe P.K. Subban hasn’t played in the NHL All-Star Game as of yet. The 26-year-old defenseman has accomplished so much since debuting with the Canadiens back in 2009-10 without making an appearance in the mid-season showcase for real. That will all change in three weeks’ time when the 2013 Norris Trophy winner heads to Bridgestone Arena in Nashville to ply his trade alongside 43 other top players in the game today. Subban, who was named to the Atlantic Division’s 11-man squad by the League’s Hockey Operations Department on Wednesday afternoon, will be one of three defenseman on Gerard Gallant’s contingent during the newly minted 3-on-3 tournament pitting all four divisions against one another. He’ll be joined by fellow rearguards Aaron Ekblad and Erik Karlsson, forwards Patrice Bergeron, Jaromir Jagr, Leo Komarov, Dylan Larkin, Ryan O’Reilly and Steven Stamkos, and goaltenders Roberto Luongo and Ben Bishop. The Canadiens’ No. 76 made an appearance at the 2011 NHL All-Star G

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced on Thursday the acquisition of right winger Max Friberg from the Anaheim Ducks, in return for goaltender Dustin Tokarski. He will join the IceCaps in St. John’s. Friberg, 23, has served two penalty minutes in six career NHL games with the Ducks. He has added 17 points (5 goals, 12 assists) in 25 games with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls thus far this season. The 5’11’’ and 200 lb left winger has collected 98 points (38 goals, 60 assists) and 105 penalty minutes in 169 career games in the American Hockey League. On the international stage, Friberg helped Sweden capture the gold medal at the 2012 World Junior Championship (in Calgary and Edmonton). He led the tournament with nine goals and led his team with 11 points (tied for second among tournament point leaders), and was named to the tournament all-star team. A native of Skovde, Sweden, Friberg was the Ducks’ fifth round selection, 143rd overall, at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Dustin

MONTREAL – Paul Byron has found a way to turn killing penalties into an offensive opportunity. Picking up his fifth shorthanded point of the campaign after sliding a perfect pass to Torrey Mitchell for the eventual game-winning goal, Byron now sits atop the NHL in points on the PK. Doing some of his best work when the team is down a man, the 26-year-old winger has played a major role in helping the Habs snuff out 84.8 percent of opposing power plays while countering with eight shorthanded markers. He may have played just 1:21 on the power play this season, but that hasn’t stopped the speedy forward from finding ways to get in on the special teams lamp lighting action in 2015-16. “[Former Buffalo GM] Darcy Regier once told me in Buffalo that you need a niche to make a spot for yourself in the NHL and I think the PK is definitely my niche,” shared Byron, who spent three seasons in the Sabres organization after being drafted by Buffalo in the sixth round in 2007. “It’s something I excel at. I don’t know

DEVILS (20-15-5) @ CANADIENS (22-16-3) TV: RDS, SN 7:00 p.m. For the first time in nearly three weeks, the Habs will be back on home ice on Wednesday night when they welcome the New Jersey Devils. After an eight-game road trip culminating with Tuesday night’s 4-3 loss in Philadelphia, the Canadiens will be happy to be back in front of the Bell Centre faithful. Though Alex Galchenyuk would tie the game at 1-1 late in the first period, the Flyers stormed back to gain a two goal cushion. Goals from Brendan Gallagher and Daniel Carr would cut the Flyer’s lead down to one, but ultimately the Canadiens comeback came up just short. In the loss – the team’s eighth in their last ten contests – Ben Scrivens turned aside 27 of the 31 shots he faced in his second start with the Habs. For their part, the Devils three-game win streak was snapped on Monday night with a 1-0 shutout loss at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings. With back-to-back games on tap, Michel Therrien’s troops did not practice on Wednes
